The year was 1983, even though modern technology had allowed us the comforts of running water, indoor bathrooms, and electricity, this fascination had not yet taken hold on the people that lived in the backwoods of the Appalachian mountains.
It was his grandparents house, and the only time they had the luxury of getting running water was when he came to visit. Meaning he got to run down to the creek (crick) and get it for them.
He remembers those days like it was yesterday. The front porch squeaking, having to duck your head to get in the front door, and the smell of firewood in the furnace. Seems like back then it was just simpler, and easy to live.
One thing he remembers most was the words his grandpa told him on a Christmas Day after everyone was packing up to leave.
Son, don’t forget to make friends first. Everything else comes after that. – Grandpa Cody
That young boy was me, and I think it’s funny how those words have affected me even to this day. Even though this was something that was said nonchalantly, I don’t believe that Gramps knew the weight that these words carried…or maybe he did, who knows? He was a funny guy.
The Mindset of Making Money Online
This is something I can relate to. There is nothing better than being able to quit your day job to stay at home and make a living. People all over the world are doing it every day, which tells you how powerful this thought process actually is.
However, in order to make the money you want to make, you need to throw away the thought processes behind making money online and adopting a new thought process.
The power of your mind
There is nothing more powerful than your mind or a thought that is acted upon once your mind thinks of it. No one fears a daydreamer for they will do nothing. It’s the people that actually get up and do something about the dream are the people who get results!
When it comes to online success you have to be able to restructure that thought process though.
Now this is a difficult thing to do because you are so ready to act on the previous thought. The one that tells you you’re going to make a killing on the internet! In order to rearrange your thoughts, you have to fill that space with another thought that is as proactive as the one before it.
It’s so difficult to push aside something you’re excited about, to do another thing that may not look so glamorous at first. No one wants to say I want to push buggies at Wal-Mart for a living!
But I have a friend who started out doing just that. His desire was to manage a Wal-Mart. Now you may be laughing at his thought process because most of us see Wal-Mart as a place that may not be that extravagant a job, however, senior manager’s make over 6 figures a year with great benefits!
He got the job at Wal-Mart, and wouldn’t you know, they put him out to grab the shopping carts left in the parking lot. Long story short, he is now senior manager of a Wal-Mart store making the money he wanted to make.
Why?
He rearranged his thoughts. He realized that to get to where he wanted to be, he needed to do things he may not want to do. He even told me later that he got to where he enjoyed going outside to get the carts. It allowed him some time to himself, it gave him some exercise, and some fresh air to clear his head.
He found benefits in doing something he normally wouldn’t want to do.
Your First Thought
The first and last thought is making money online. First you thinking about making money online, then you need to rearrange that first thought to be more acceptable and manageable. Something that you are able to do right now that will provide results for your business.
What is it?
Your first thought needs to be about building your relationships with other people around you. Building relationships that are worthwhile takes time and while this may not seem glamorous to you at first, you will start to enjoy this most of all because you are not only creating confidants in your business and yourself, but you start to understand that the first step is the most important step in any business.
That’s because you have to learn to do the first step well and enjoy it.
People will not respond to you if they feel you are only creating connections just to be creating connections. They can sense when you have only your desires at heart. That’s why relationship marketing takes time. At first, you’re fighting yourself, and that first thought about making money online. You’re trying to overcome that thought and replace it with the thought of building the relationship.
Once you succeed in winning, you start to find that it truly is a pleasure building connections with other people that are trying to do the same things you’re trying to do.
How You Can Do This
Something you can do right now is to think about the niche you’re in. Did you do that? Now do these things below:
- Find other people that are in that same niche.
- Circle or follow them.
- Watch their stream and reshare the things that you think are helpful (tagging is accepted in reshares).
- Repeat #3 consistently.
- Join communities on Google Plus, LinkedIn, or Facebook groups and be active.
- Be helpful to people on topics you know about.
- Repeat #6 consistently.
- Find a comment thread that appeals to you and engage.
- Share your own articles sparingly at first.
- Engage in Google Hangout events and make friends there.
These are some things that you can do right now on social. Remember that at first, your content isn’t really important. However, I would still stick to a writing schedule of at least one post per week on your blog. Your main focus is THEM not you.
The Final Thought
Relationship building is the foundation for success. I know your first thought is of making money online, but you have to listen to a wise man that once said, “Make friends first, and everything else comes later”. So true. You will find that if you do this the right way, success will come without you even thinking about it. Don’t fall into the trap of believing that you can come online and start being successful the first month. That would be nice if you could, but it just doesn’t work that way. Build the relationship first..If you build it, they will come.
