The underdog is someone that people don’t expect will make a difference.
The underdog is a person that may be on someone’s radar, but there’s no respect there, no drive to help them achieve.
Today’s post is for you.
That person that may not have a lot of followers and are suddenly aware that you have things to contribute to, but no one’s paying attention.
There are lots of underdogs in today’s social media, there are more forward thinking underdogs in social media than there are influencers…so does that actually make them the underdogs?
No, and I’ll tell you why.
We’re Giving Away Our Power
You have the power to give someone the power.
Remember the He-Man cartoons?
He-Man would grab his sword, lift it high above his head, and scream, I have the POWER!
He-Man wasn’t the power, the sword was the power and he was simply claiming that he had it. (The sword)
You are the sword, and you are giving other people around you the power of influence, when, in fact, some of them don’t deserve it.
The lack of accountability
We are too used to letting people by with the little things. Especially people of influence.
Let me bring you down to earth, while most true influencer’s are astounding in thought, they’ve got there the right way.
Influence runs in such a crazy way that when someone has influence, and there are other people around them that they confide in, that the influence they have leaks into the lives of these close confidants.
They didn’t get there by themselves, rather, they have coasted in on the coat-tails of the one that has done all of the work.
It’s our fault, really, because we allow this to happen.
We allow them the power of influence and take everything they say as gold as they tramp all over our desires and dreams.
There is no accountability for these people.
As I said, we’re taking everything they say as truth and not asking the hard questions. We allow them to sway us simply because they are who they are, and not because the words they say are true.
The Power of the Underdog
I was recently a guest on Joey Giangola’s Hangout show called Fearlessly Questioning: Being the Underdog and I guess Joey is to blame for this post because it made me start to think about influencers and underdogs and the role they play.
Watch That Episode Here:
Taking the Bull
I can understand where you’re standing right now. Perhaps you are lost in a sea of influencers and forward thinkers and you are having a hard time trying to find your footing.
One thing I can tell you about being the underdog is the fact that people aren’t going to listen until you have something to say.
It doesn’t matter about the number of social followers you have (another mispoken fault by an influencer this week), it matters how you approach people.
There will always be influencers, and people posing as influencers, but the one thing that remains the same is the truth that you still have the power to give whomever you want that sword of influence to show you the way.
There will be people that will try to take it from you so they can “lord” over you, but it’s still your fault if you let them have it.
Being The Underdog
You may be in a position right now that qualifies you as an underdog, and there are some ‘influencers’ that will always see you that way, letting little things stand in their way of giving you respect.
Don’t let that drag you down. You can succeed without them.
I know I’ve talked about getting the influencers attention, because it’s always nice to have someone of importance rooting for you, but it’s not necessary to have.
As long as you are thinking of your followers, whether 5 or 5 million, you will never be considered the underdog by them.
You will see that eventually they will give you that power for yourself over time.
You affect someone.
You have the ability to help someone that no one else can…and that, my friend, is not being an underdog.
